Random October 13

So far the weather here is beautiful almost every day. I didn't really mind the rain we had yesterday except for the time it added to my commute.

I have yet to understand/predict the traffic patterns here. I could pretty much predict how long the drive to work was going to take me in NJ based on the time of year/weather/time I left. I guess I need a little more time for that or maybe I'll just never know.

There's more snow on the mountains and it is absolutely beautiful!

I thought I was going to go to masters swim a lot more once I moved here. So far, I've only been once. Buying that 20-swim punch pass isn't working out so well for me yet...

The problem with swimming is that the longer you've been away from the pool, the scarier it is to go back. Especially to a 90 swim workout at 5:15 am at altitude.

I was spoiled living so close to a Wegman's in NJ. The grocery stores here are over priced and are nothing very special. We've quickly realized that unless we buy the Kroger brand or whatever they decide they want us to buy that is on their "club sale" at the King Soopers, it is actually the same price to shop at Whole Foods. So that's what were doing. Yup, I'm one of those people that lives in a cul-de-sac, drives an SUV, shops at Whole Foods, and I'm sure I could add to the list...

We've started planning the menu out in advance and only buying food from the list (which keeps the Whole Foods trip in check somewhat). So yesterday I was chopping veggies and baking away. I don't really like garlic, and realized it's not really worth the effort of chopping it to put into a meal if I don't really like it that much. So next time, I'm leaving it out. Also, word to the wise, if you don't have any other oil or butter, Olive Oil is not a good substitute. It's still cake and all, but it wasn't that good.

We went to Adam's cousin's wedding in Denver this weekend. Up until that point I was trying to make the shift back to gluten free but wasn't 100% there. This weekend pushed me over the edge and back to the gluten free side. At the rehearsal dinner I ate adult mac and cheese. Then at the wedding I had appetizers filled with wheat, then several types of bread, and a cupcake, along with the regular meal. It was like once I gave myself the ok, I didn't stop. Then brunch the next morning, I wasn't feeling great but I added on 2 bagels and 2 cupcakes and started feeling seriously ill. Smooth move. My lungs and stomach ached. I just wanted to lay down in a room by myself and sleep. I guess maybe I needed to feel that bad to realize that the taste of the food wasn't worth feeling ill.

Adam and I got dressed to go ride Deer Creek Sunday afternoon but a cold rain started and I was feeling pretty miserable, so even though we were out there in our biking clothes we headed back and I took a map instead.

The wedding was really nice, the shortest ceremony I've every been to and a really nice reception and I had a lot of fun dancing with Adam :)

I had a really good run on Saturday. There's a dirt path only 10 mins running from our house called the Highline canal. I ran one direction on it after work during the week last week and ran the other direction away from Denver on Saturday. I ended up with a 72+ min run and felt really good. It reminds me of the Delaware Raritan Canal Towpath in NJ except a few differences here:
-No water in the canal here this time of year
-No fisherman (a good thing!)
-More runners (but not too many), it's nice to have time alone on the trail
-Less trees/shade--I miss the trees :(
-a nice view of the mountains for most of the run!

I still need to organize all my clothes from the move. Spending 20 mins looking for socks every day is getting really old. That is one of the big goals for this weekend. That and doing the Deer Creek ride.

And to end the post, a quote for the day (or week I suppose).

The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing. ~John Powell

I live in NJ, work in Trenton, I know exactly which tow path you are talking about...a girl I work with is usually always on that path. I bike and I swim and I just recently got back to swimming....and your right, when your away from it for a while....it takes some effort to get back...but I did and I am so glad I did....I feel much better since I started back. Good luck with the transition in a new state.....are you originally a Jersey girl? I've been here my whole life. Happy Trails to you! :-)

Sounds like your adjusting and don't push yourself to hard into a routine yet. It's crazy to do that this time of year anyway! I like that idea about the menu.. I need to work on that!! Keep up the good work and I hope your new job is treating you well!

Sounds like you guys are getting all set up and settled in! Your running path sounds awesome. And now you know about the gluten. Ugh - but just think how much better you will feel without it!
